Labs
Labs let faculty build a classroom or skills-lab activity once, then create the related skill evaluations, simulated patient evaluations, and sim sessions for many students at the same time.
Lab templates and Labs
Section titled “Lab templates and Labs”A Lab Template is the reusable setup for an activity. It contains the profession, certification level, requirements, and the items students will complete.
A Lab is a scheduled or assigned instance of a template. When you assign or complete a Lab, EMCE creates the child evaluations for the selected students and tracks their progress together.
Create a lab template
Section titled “Create a lab template”- Go to Evaluations.
- Open Labs.
- On the Lab Templates tab, tap the button.
- Set the template’s profession and certification level.
- Add requirements or add individual Lab items.
- Save the template.
Lab items can include:
- Skills for isolated skill performance.
- Patients for simulated patient encounters.
- Sim Sessions for team-based simulation activities.
For skill and patient items, choose whether the item is evaluated by an Instructor or by a Peer. Sim Session items use teams and facilitators instead.
Assign a Lab
Section titled “Assign a Lab”Use Assign Evals to Students when students still need to complete the work.
- Open the Lab Template.
- Tap Assign Evals to Students.
- Select the students who should receive the Lab.
- Choose how the Lab connects to the schedule:
- Pick existing event to link the Lab to an event that already exists.
- Create new event to create a schedule event while assigning the Lab.
- For Sim Session items, review the teams and facilitators.
- Save the Lab.
EMCE creates the Lab, links or creates the schedule event, and then generates the child evaluations. The Lab screen shows processing progress while those evaluations are created.
Complete a Lab immediately
Section titled “Complete a Lab immediately”Use Complete Evals when the activity has already happened and you want to record instructor-evaluated results in one pass.
- Open the Lab Template.
- Tap Complete Evals.
- Select the students.
- Choose the Lab evaluator.
- If the template includes peer-evaluated items, choose whether to assign those peer evals to students or skip them.
- Save the Lab.
Instructor-evaluated skill and patient items are generated as completed evaluations. Peer-evaluated items can still become student To Do items. Sim Sessions must be run live and cannot be completed in bulk from this flow.
Review Lab progress
Section titled “Review Lab progress”Open the Labs tab to review Labs that have already been assigned or completed. You can filter the list by organization unit, cohort, required course, creator, evaluator, event, or date range.
The Lab screen includes:
- Overview for Lab details and generation status.
- Linked Event when the Lab is connected to a schedule event.
- Roster for student participation and completion progress.
- Student Progress for requirement completion.
- Peer Evaluations for student-visible peer-eval slots.
Students see Labs they participate in from their Labs view. If a Lab includes peer-evaluated items, students can claim available peer evaluations and complete them from their To Do list.
